Meet Up

I have been here for 1 month and 9 days, I have unpacked, arranged, hung up pictures, learned how to get to quite a few stores, met new family members, seen family members I haven't seen in some time, had my Mamma here, enjoyed the snow, remembered why I loved living in Virginia, remembered why I think it's good to be living in Illinois, gotten lost, found my way, gotten sick for the first time in a loooong time and knitted....a lot. But one thing I have not done since moving here to Illinois is make new friends!!!

I made friends with family members but I haven't met anyone other than family since we have been here and I need to find friends. I have joined a meet up group for knitters and crafters and they meet up twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday nights. I am really excited to go to a meeting, I can't wait to meet some new people and new people who knit :o) That's one of the hardest things about moving to a new place...you have to make new friends! I am a very outgoing person, I can talk to anyone. I just have a hard time making new friends.

Do you have some suggestions for me on how to meet people and make new friends? Do you live in the area?? That would be great, to meet some bloggy friends that live close by :o)

I wished we lived close! I'm sure you'll meet some people in the craft group...and maybe some moms at your boy's school?

making friends takes a long time,, as you know, since you have little guys it will be easier because they are usually outgoing and meet people for you, be patient and I'm proud of you for being so brave and moving to a new area. good luck. kare

Helga,

The only advise I have is probably the advise you don't want to hear - It takes time.

We moved from southern Illinois to North Carolina three years ago last month. I met people but I don't think I made any real friends for a good six months and even those aren't close friends just good ones.
But I now go out and run into people I know in stores and from time to time get together with some for lunch.

The flip side of not knowing many people yet I found was I had less demands placed on me.

Hope you enjoy your knitting group. ;)

Wish I lived closer, too!

Good luck - I've lived here my whole life and all the friends I had seem to be in different places in their lives or have moved away...I need to make new friends, too. I'm working on it the same way you are - but at a book club not a knitting one! :)

Love u mamma

Oh, Helga - this is the toughest thing about moving, isn't it? The toughest move for me was when we moved from Eau Claire to Hudson - this last move - about 4 1/2 years ago. Some ways I still feel like a newbie. If it weren't for SAMmy's, I think I wouldn't know anyone YET. The knitting group is a good start! It's defifitely easier for outgoing people - you have that going for you!

My friend (bloggy friend, even) Shelly K (not Shelly, but Shelly K)lives in the Eau Claire area half the time and Chicago area half the time (military...). She's planning on moving to Chi full time eventually. I should hook you two up. You'd like her. She's VERY fun. Christian. Young - about your age. Two adorable girls. She's a sewer - check out her blogs: http://photo-3-6-5.blogspot.com/ is her personal family one and http://ilikethewayyoudo.blogspot.com/ is her crafty one. I'll give her a "heads up" and let her know I've given you her info. :) At least connect through your blogs.
